Oben im Künstlerhaus angekommen, blickt der Betrachter dann zunächst in einen Rückspiegel: "Can we live together like a melody" steht darauf geschrieben - eine Liedzeile.

ŞENER ÖZMEN SOLO SHOW@KUNSTLERHAUS STUTTGART

ARTISTIC DIALOGUES I: Şener Özmen and Nevin Aladağ
Exhibition
April 21, 2011 - May 29, 2011
ARTISTIC DIALOGUES I
Şener Özmen: The Story of Şener Özmen
Nevin Aladağ: Back to First Position
“The Story of Şener Özmen“ is the first solo show in the twenty one year artistic career of Kurdish artist Şener Özmen. This will be presented alongside the first monographic exhibition from Nevin Aladağ in her hometown Stuttgart, “Back to First Position“, bridging different cultural climates and challenging current political representations.
Both solo shows opening on Wednesday, April 20, 7pm, are presented within the framework of ARTISTIC DIALOGUES, a series of solo exhibition projects at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart that bring interrelated contexts, parallel discussions, and juxtaposed ideas together through diverse artistic practices.
Diyarbakır-based Kurdish artist and writer Şener Özmen’s work is shaped within the geopolitical reality of South Anatolia, where he lives and works – not only as an open critique of state violence and militarist regime, but also as loose diary of resistance and imagination.
Özmen’s video, literary and photography works deal with the problematic nature of taking critical positions against centralizations of power at the periphery. In relation to the city context of Stuttgart, the exhibition aims to develop a retrospective look at his work and regenerate some of his previous pieces. For instance, “The Story of Tracey Emin”, his artist book from 2000, is reissued in collaboration with Stuttgart based artist-book publication collective, Edition Taube.
As a cultural observer with an artistic eye, Berlin based artist Nevin Aladağ investigates human settings and develops non-narrative stories, conceptual interactions and performative interventions. She is interested in the conditions of communal living, sharing spaces, musical elements and rituals that connect people.
Aladağ grew up in Stuttgart until her early twenties before attending the Munich Art Academy. Aladağ’s first major solo project in her home town brings together a compilation of ideas, which return to Stuttgart, where they were first created or have their roots promising its title.
Both solo projects from Şener Özmen and Nevin Aladağ share conceptual grounds by challenging the ways of looking at culture and identity. Both practices focus on the individual positions pointing at the social realities behind territories, categorizations and partiality.
Through their practices brought together in a parallel show, stories from Kurds in Turkey or Turks in Germany, music from Istanbul and Diyarbakir’s landscape as well as two different styles of humor and irony will crash into each other.

Reflecting reality, system: An analysis of a Delier exhibition@Hürriyet Daily News (Hatice UTKAN)

Until April 23

According to the German philosopher Martin Heidegger, a work of art gives an audience a starting point (punchline) to think about the “reality” and the “thing,” because Heidegger considers the reality of art as “the coming of reality.” The concept of “approaching reality” occurs in the work of art.

Not every work of art reflects reality onto the audience. Hence, the fine line between the “hard-boiled realism” and the sense of humor in artwork is something hard to create.

However, Burak Delier, a Turkish artist, succeeds when reflecting the sense of his work of art to the audience, without using the hard-boiled realism and with sense of humor.

His new show at Outlet Gallery first amazes the audience when they enter the gallery. Do not expect to see large installations or paintings or video work. Delier carried Outlet’s office to the entrance and changed the place where the office staff works.

In fact, by doing this, Delier tries to reflect the problems that working people deal with everyday. He starts with questioning the lives of people who work in large buildings. There are no borders between work life and social life. It is possible to work, to dine and do sports all in the same building. Carrying the Outlet Gallery office to the entrance reminds audiences how the capitalist system transforms the working and social lives of people.

However, Delier not only draws attention to the capitalist system and its deficiencies. What artist tries to reflect is the harsh environment of the working life or how to survive in it. Like his other works, once again Delier “presents” another detailed work.

Like all of his works, he emphasizes his work with documents. Delier searches for “qualifications or required skills” in the job applications and discovers some of the qualifications are particularly very popular, such as being presentable, can work in flexible working hours, easy to communicate, have the ability to analyze, be dynamic and ambitious, etc.

Delier removes the boundaries between working and social life. This is a kind of a questioning the system for Delier. The required skills, which job applications require are the qualifications that everyone or every artist should have. So, can we say that an artist is also a part of the corporate system? Where do artists stand in a corporate life? This may lead us to Adorno’s essay titled “Schema of Mass Culture.” In “Schema of Mass Culture,” Adorno says the commercial character of mass culture causes the difference between culture and practical life to disappear. Delier criticizes the situation by removing the boundaries and borders between the practical life and corporate life. So the system leads a no boundaries or no borders situation in people’s lives. In this scene, human beings look for a moment of independence. But this moment is lost in the process, writes Adorno. (Theodore Adorno, Culture Industry, “Schema of Mass Culture)

This approach can be analyzed in his other work titled “We Will Win.”

Delier first starts from an intervention that he held in 2008 titled “We Will Win.” However, he does not stop there, Delier makes the audiences face up to “criticizing and questioning the artwork.” Once again he does it very professionally by using a large survey.

His intervention “We Will Win” is a site-specific intervention among the Shijhou Tribe. His project stands at the center of controversial plans to dismantle housing on an area of land that has been flooded by typhoons. It has been proven that this site has been flooded three times in the past 30 years due to a simple defect of blocked gutters.

Delier gathered with the people from the village and prepared a large banner that had “We Will Win” written on it. He tries to arouse awareness to how society lives.

Later on at a 2010 biennale Delier expanded his project and he published a booklet on testing both “We Will Win” intervention and revealed the questions that face the culture industry.

Delier starts from a question: “Is it possible to provide critique at an art biennale?” He thinks that there is no simple “yes” or “no” answer to the question.

“On the contrary, to say yes or no – accepting the system unquestioningly or carrying romantic attitudes of escapist rejections – forms the very obstacle to being critical. Whereas criticism is only possible in an area where absolute judgment is delayed,” writes Delier in his text that appeared in We Will Win survey catalogue at Taipei biennale in 2010. (Translated by Michael Ziya Dikbaş, published by Taipei fine arts museum)

In the survey Delier asks questions such as, do you agree that art should be a critical power? What is the most important thing in an artwork?

With these questions Delier also emphasizes how an artist exists in society or haw he or she can exist in the society. In the book published by Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Delier writes that he believes an artist, as a distinct subject that we can validly call “an artist,” no longer exists. In this day and age, it is only within the art market that the artist subjects can survive – if you call it a life.”

Another important work of Delier might be the “Parkalynch” product that he by himself produced. As an artist, Delier not only creates art, he also produces products and works with research companies to evaluate how this product’s feedback returns to the market.

By doing this, Delier not only criticizes the system, he also draws attention to how things work in the system, because Delier is not an artist who screams like he is against something or against a thought or system. He prefers to show the audiences why he is against or in favor of using documents of paper, with research and with utilizing lots of facts and figures.

In his work titled “Parkalynch,” Delier’s product of the same name and is the debut product by his imaginary corporation called “Tersyön,” is evaluated by a research company.

“Parkalynch” is clothing designed for protection against lynch attacks and it is resistant to stones, sticks, batons and punches. The project deals with the process of carrying out feasibility research at the imaginary corporation “Tersyön.”

His installation is composed of three zones. Two zones feature looping videos and the third one is a meeting-room like space that is separated by glass walls in which the data gathered through the research is presented. The audio can only be heard in this room through earphones.

One of the videos (Field) is compiled from the “in-depth interviews” which is a starting point of the market research.

The other one (Meeting) is realized in a “focus group” room with a participation of business professionals.

Delier succeeds to carry the perception of art to another level with his projects. The project says that the art is not a part of our current entertainment culture. It is something more. Delier questions the perception of art in the human mind and discovers a new dimension in it. He not only questions the art and the place of an artist in it, he also tells us he discovered something new in art and that’s why he names his show as “I slowly came to discover that it is more meaningful and subversive to engage in experimental investigations of art than create some self-contenting, easily commoditized anarchist gestures.”

After seeing the exhibition, understanding his “raison d’ être,” it becomes meaningful to understand what drives Delier to create these art projects.

BURAK DELIER@ TODAY'S ZAMAN (Rumeysa Kiger)

A challenging show by contemporary artist Burak Delier exploring the overlaps and disconnects of capitalism and contemporary artistic practices is currently on display at the Outlet//Independent Art Space in İstanbul’s Tophane neighborhood.

Delier’s show, titled ‘I slowly come to discover that it is more meaningful and subversive to engage in experimental investigations on art than carrying out some self-content, easily commoditized anarchist gestures,’ runs until April 23 at Outlet

The first thing that strikes the visitor in this show is the alteration of the usual business and exhibit spaces in the gallery in a performance piece titled “At Work.” Delier brings the office together with the people working in it to the entrance of the gallery while converting the office space on the second floor of the building for one of his art projects.

According to Delier, art appreciation was traditionally recognized as a leisure activity that one engaged in after work or on weekends. “These were the times during which people enriched and cultivated themselves. In the contemporary world, however, the conditions of business life changed drastically with the emergence of home offices and irregular working hours. Leisure time was transformed into a part of production and, accordingly, leisure time activities became values people put on their resumes. Normally in this gallery, the second floor is the working area and downstairs houses the display areas. When I brought upstairs downstairs, the activities in this working area became a performance itself,” the artist explains in an interview with Today’s Zaman.

Reflecting the ways in which the business and art worlds are intertwined, the performance is connected to a workshop titled “Required Skills” conducted by the artist on the basis of the idea that an individual markets himself or herself as a product or label in the contemporary world just like an artist. The participants in the workshop attempted to find out whether the profiles of artists overlap with the profiles of potential employees by analyzing the qualities cited in 100 randomly chosen job advertisements.

Selling overall performance in life

Delier emphasizes that today not just artists, but every single person must perpetually improve themselves. “What one sells today is not just a service, but also his or her overall performance in life. In this sense, there is a major overlap between art and capitalism because this has been the case in the art world from the very beginning, anyways. The persona has always been very significant. Of course, the work has also been very important, but the performance of the artist has always been the determinant,” he says, adding that conditions in the business and art worlds have a profound similarity in terms of being creative and critical and offering flexible work hours.

Another thought-provoking work in the show is an installation consisting of three parts: two videos showcasing the feasibility research steps of a product titled “Parkalynch” that Delier produced in 2007 for the 10th İstanbul Biennial and a meeting-room-like space separated by glass walls in which the outcomes of the research are available to the visitor. “Four years ago, I founded ‘Tersyön,’ which is an imaginary corporation that produces a special jacket that protects the owner during mob attacks. In 2007, Turkey witnessed several mob attacks against various groups. My initial aim was to offer a debate through ‘consumption democracy’ by making such a product. This time, I am showcasing the feasibility research, how the slogan for the product is determined, how it is designed, how the market research is conducted. I wanted to give visibility to these kinds of processes,” Delier notes, pointing out that in the contemporary world production is not enabled through workers in factories, but through many other production methods. “All of the individuals working in the social sciences have become a tool of capitalism. I aimed to show all these mechanisms and how contemporary capitalism operates subtly,” he explains.

Finally, on the second floor of the gallery, the artist exhibits the questionnaire, the book and other materials of the production process of his work “We Will Win,” which he produced for the Taipei Biennial. In 2008, Delier conducted a site-specific work in a small village that is facing an ongoing urban renewal process. In collaboration with the residents of this area, the artist produced a large banner on which the words “We Will Win” were written. In the current show, however, he is investigating what kind of an effect this work created at the biennial through the responses to the piece by managers, artists, curators, audience and staff.

Delier’s show, titled “I slowly come to discover that it is more meaningful and subversive to engage in experimental investigations on art than carrying out some self-content, easily commoditized anarchist gestures,” will run through April 23 at Outlet.

Delier has also contributed to the “Where Fire Has Struck” exhibition, which marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey and runs until April 22 at the Depo art space in Tophane.

SERGİ
Burak Delier’in sergisi, 23 Nisan’a kadar Outlet’te
